Hemaya condemns murder of Abu Ein during peaceful protest

Hemaya Center for Human Rights strongly condemns Wednesday’smurderby Israeli troops of 55 yearold ZeyadMuhammed Ahmed Abu Ein, parliamentary minister and head of the PLO Commission Against the Separation Wall and Settlements,at a peaceful protestto mark International Human Rights Day in Turmusayya village, West Bank.

According to testimony obtained by Hemaya researchers, Abu Ein was leading the protest organized by the Commission Against the Separation Wall and Settlements in co-operation together with the Popular Struggle Coordination Committeeand the farmers of Turmusayya village at which they planted olive treesto symbolize their rejection of the Israeli occupation.

During the protest, Israeli troops attacked the participants using excessive force, firing gas canisters directly at them. An Israeli soldier king-hit Abu Ein with his metal helmet causing Abu Einto lose consciousness. He was transferred to hospital, where medical sources declared his death shortly after his arrival.

The attack by Israeli troops against peaceful Palestinian demonstrators is unjustified and violates Article 147 of the Fourth Geneva Convention.

We at Hemaya Center for Human Rights condemn this attack and confirm that this crime is a result of excessive use of forceagainst Palestinian civilians by the Israeli occupation. This violates international agreements and conventions which guarantee the right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. We therefore:

  1. Condemn the use of deadly force against peaceful protesters and we stress that this is an extrajudicial murder.
  2. Call for an independent international commission of inquiry into the incident.
  3. Call on the High Contracting Parties to the Fourth Geneva Convention to put pressure on the Israeli occupation to comply with the rules of international and humanitarian law in the occupied Palestinian Territories.

Hemaya Center for Human Rights.
